Advising 101 introduces academic advisors to core advising skills through observation, practice, and reflection. This unit focuses on building confidence in conducting advising appointments, creating accurate academic progress plans, responding to common student questions, and documenting appointments using clear, objective, and university-compliant notes.

Advisors observe a colleague or supervisor during an advising appointment and complete a short reflection identifying key advisor–student interactions. They then work through realistic student scenarios in D2L to practice academic planning aligned with curriculum guidelines. Interactive branching scenarios allow advisors to apply their knowledge of campus resources by responding to common student questions in a simulated advising appointment.

The unit concludes with practice in professional documentation, where advisors evaluate examples of advising notes after viewing a mock appointment video. Delivered through D2L and supported by tools such as H5P and Camtasia, Advising 101 provides a concise, hands-on foundation for effective, student-centered advising.
